Analog vs. Digital Signal

When it comes to signal processing, analog and digital are two main types of signals used to transfer information. The primary difference between an analog and a digital signal lies in how the signal is transmitted, displayed, and processed.

Analog Signal:

An analog signal is a continuous wave that varies in amplitude and frequency over time. It is represented by a smooth, continuous curve. Analog signals are used in traditional devices like telephones, radios, and vinyl records. These signals can have an infinite number of possible values within a specific range and can capture subtle nuances in sound or image.

Digital Signal:

On the other hand, a digital signal is a discrete signal that is transmitted as a series of on/off pulses represented by binary code (0s and 1s). Digital signals are used in modern devices like computers, smartphones, and CDs. These signals have a finite set of defined values and are less susceptible to noise interference compared to analog signals.

In summary, the main difference between analog and digital signals is the way they represent and transmit information – while analog signals are continuous and smooth, digital signals are discrete and binary. Each type of signal has its own advantages and disadvantages depending on the application and requirements of the system.
