Types of Galaxy Clusters

Galaxy clusters are large structures in the universe made up of galaxies, hot gas, and dark matter. There are three main types of galaxy clusters: regular clusters, irregular clusters, and superclusters.

Regular Clusters

Regular clusters, also known as rich clusters, are tightly packed groups of galaxies. These clusters have a high galaxy density at their centers and exhibit a spherical or elliptical shape. Regular clusters are typically composed of elliptical and lenticular galaxies, along with hot gas and dark matter. They are the most common type of galaxy cluster in the universe.

Irregular Clusters

Irregular clusters, also known as poor clusters, are looser groups of galaxies with a lower galaxy density compared to regular clusters. Irregular clusters lack a well-defined shape and often contain spiral galaxies along with other types of galaxies. These clusters have less hot gas and dark matter compared to regular clusters.

Superclusters

Superclusters are the largest structures in the universe, consisting of multiple galaxy clusters and groups. These massive structures can span hundreds of millions of light-years and contain thousands of galaxies. Superclusters exhibit a complex and interconnected network of galaxies, making them key components in the large-scale structure of the universe.
